Lois Harter was born in
Pennsylvania, raised in Florida and migrated to Alaska in 1974 with her husband, four children, four Dobermans and a Sheltie. She worked for the Iditarod Race Organization for over 30 years, first as a volunteer and then an employee. Ms. Harter is passionate about helping teachers find ways to excite students about learning. She was responsible for the Iditarod's presence on the Internet and she created an extensive education program using the Iditarod as a learning tool. She established the Teacher on the Trail (TOTT) program and twice yearly seminars for teachers to learn more about using the Iditarod as a learning adventure for their students. She is probably best know for her creation of a K-9 Husky sports reporter named, "Zuma" who wrote a column on the Iditarod website called "Zuma's Paw Prints." Lois is divorced with four grown children, thirteen grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She makes her home in Chugiak, Alaska
