In 2003, Wally Lamb published
Couldn't Keep it to Myself, a collection of essays by the students at his writing workshop at the York Correctional Institution, a women's prison in Connecticut. Lamb found that writing was an unexpected and transforming way for these women to recapture their humanity and provide relief from despair that so many of the inmates experienced. I'll Fly Away is the second volume of intimate and searching pieces from Lamb's workshop.
