Brit Wit by Lucia St. Clair Robson
When I began researching 17th-centuryEnglish settlers for my novel Mary's Land I was surprised to find they weren't nearly as boring as I'd expected. In fact, they were downright outrageous. So when giving speeches on the subject I would talk about what a lecherous, larcenous, litigious, libidinous, libelous, smelly lot my British ancestors were. I figured that because I was talking about "my people... Episcopalians..." I could malign them without being considered a bigot. I was wrong, of course. At the signing after one of my talks, a woman reached the head of the line. In a charming British accent she said, "Could you write about the French next time?"
