Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Red? by Phyllis Johnson
I was having my fifthbook signing for Hot and Bothered By It and since the book cover is predominantly red, I decided to wear a long red dress. Someone working in the store hinted that maybe it was too much red. Perhaps it would be intimidating. I looked down at what I had on and wondered if he could be right. All things considered, I'd already worn it to another signing and sold books there so I'd decided it couldn't be too overpowering. But wait, the strong presence of red there was offset by the fact that my table was right next to J.K. Rowling's table with her newly releaesd book. That did help draw a crowd who also happened to notice me sitting there... red and all. The red attracted attention from even those who had no interest in women's books as I quickly learned when I found myself hearing all about World War II from a man who came by. Obviously I wasn't camouflaged by any means. Taking a drag on my straw positioned over my Starbucks Caramel Frappucino, I also caught the eye of other guys who smiled broadly and stopped to buy their wives or girlfriends one of my books. Hey, maybe the red was working... As they'd flip through the pages and make comments on poems inside such as those titled: Fishnets Aren't Just for Catching Fish, One Hot Mama, and What Color is Your Laundry Chute? I found myself feeling as red as my dress ... and I'M THE ONE WHO WROTE THE BOOK...
